ChatGPT Dots are always-on agents inside ChatGPT, powered by GPT-6 Astra, that keep working on your projects between conversations.

It keeps going when the chat is closed

A dot has its own cloud computer and browser. OpenAI says it can connect to more than 4,000 apps through ChatGPT plugins. You can open that computer and watch the work, and you can also let it use your own laptop.

• You give it a goal, such as meeting briefs or tracking a project, and it keeps several of those going without a new thread for each one.
• While you are away it does what OpenAI calls proactive research, and only with read-only tools. In that mode it cannot send messages, edit apps, or control your browser or computer.
• One early tester's dot noticed a missed invoice, prepared it, and sent it only after he approved.

Where you talk to it

• ChatGPT on desktop, the web, and mobile, including a voice call.
• Slack and Microsoft Teams. Texting is listed as coming later.
• You create the first dot in the ChatGPT desktop app or a desktop browser. After that you can message it from the mobile app.

Who gets one, and what it spends

Dots started rolling out on September 29, 2026 to ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium in eligible markets. Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare can try a beta once a workspace admin turns it on. The first dot is included on those paid plans at no extra charge. Free plans are not in this rollout.

• Chatting with your dot does not count toward ChatGPT usage limits.
• Tasks it starts in Codex or ChatGPT Work do count, the same as if you had started them.
• OpenAI says you will later be able to add more dots, or raise one dot's speed or monthly workload. Those add-ons are not part of this launch.

What still needs you

• Custom Rules can allow an action, require approval, or block it. Built-in safety rules still apply.
• Auto-review checks actions that could touch your accounts or share information. Changing a password always stays with you.
• If monitoring flags a safety problem, OpenAI says it can pause or stop the dot.
• Business, Enterprise, and Edu content is not used to improve models by default. On personal plans you can turn that off. OpenAI says it does not train directly on proactive research or the dot's notes to itself.

Specialist dots are a separate pilot

A company can set up specialist dots with their own identity and access, for jobs such as procurement, invoices, and support. OpenAI is running those as focused enterprise pilots, including work with Microsoft Agent 365. They are not a switch on a personal Pro plan.
