Muse vs ChatGPT Dots: Which Personal Agent Fits?
Muse and ChatGPT Dots both keep working after you close the chat. They differ in where you message them, which plan you already pay for, and what each company says must be approved first.
If you want an assistant that keeps working after you close the chat, two new ones are built for that: Meta's Muse and OpenAI's ChatGPT Dots. Both take a goal and come back later. They differ in where you talk to them, which account you already pay for, and what each company says has to be approved before the agent acts.

Muse: a Meta agent you message, including on WhatsApp
Meta introduced Muse on September 8, 2026. You talk to it like a message, in the Muse app or in WhatsApp. It runs on Muse Spark, inside a Muse Secure VM: a cloud computer that holds the agent and the data for accounts you connect.
The announcement's own examples are ordinary errands and longer jobs: send an email, book travel, sell a car, lower a bill, turn a saved Instagram recipe into a grocery list. It keeps working after you close the app, and it is supposed to stop for a yes before it sends a message or pays.
Meta describes a second process, Sentinel, on that same machine. Nothing Muse sends to the internet goes out unless Sentinel approves it, and it asks you when the action is sensitive. Passwords and payment methods go into storage Muse can use but cannot read. Meta also says conversations and the data in that VM are not shared with its ad systems. A later Confidential VM, encrypted with a key only you hold, is described as coming later this year and is not available yet.
Checkout in the announcement is Link from Stripe. Meta says Muse is the first AI agent covered by Link's purchase protections, using a one-time card so the real card number stays hidden. Shop Pay and 1Password are listed as coming later.
ChatGPT Dots: an agent inside ChatGPT, on GPT-6 Astra
OpenAI introduced Dots on September 29, 2026. A dot has its own cloud computer and browser, and OpenAI says it can connect to more than 4,000 apps through ChatGPT plugins. You can open that computer and watch the work. You can also let it use your own laptop.
While you are away it does what OpenAI calls proactive research, and only with read-only tools. In that mode it cannot send messages, edit apps, or control your browser or computer. Custom Rules can allow an action, require approval, or block it. Changing a password always stays with you. If monitoring flags a safety problem, OpenAI says it can pause or stop the dot.
You create the first dot in the ChatGPT desktop app or a desktop browser. After that you can message it from the mobile app. Slack and Microsoft Teams are available now. Texting is listed as coming later.
Chatting with your dot does not count toward ChatGPT usage limits. Tasks it starts in Codex or ChatGPT Work do count, the same as if you had started them. OpenAI says you will later be able to add more dots, or raise one dot's speed or monthly workload. Those add-ons are not part of this launch.
A company can also set up specialist dots, with their own identity and access, for jobs such as procurement and invoices. OpenAI is running those as enterprise pilots, including work with Microsoft Agent 365. They are not a switch on a personal Pro plan.
Which one to open
- You already pay for ChatGPT Pro or Business Premium, and you want the agent in ChatGPT, Slack, or Teams. Start with Dots. The first dot is included on those plans. Free ChatGPT plans are not in this rollout.
- You want to message the agent in WhatsApp or in Meta's own app, and you are in the US rollout. Start with Muse. Meta says it is free for most of what people need. The paid tier prices are not published, so compare those when they are.
- You care who has to approve an action. Muse's announcement puts a separate Sentinel process in front of anything that leaves the VM, and says it asks before a send or a payment. Dots use Custom Rules plus auto-review, keep proactive research read-only, and keep password changes with you. Those are the controls each company published. They are not a score.
